WHEN YOU HAVE A BUSH PROPERTY THE SIZE OF OURS TIME CAN CONCEAL HIDDEN GEMS!

From our early history especially as the bush encroaches what was once cleared land. Nestled in the untamed bush is a reminder of the early days of CVNC circa 1963. As it was decommissioned decades ago, does it meet the requirements for heritage listing? Our club property is situated in the Brisbane Ranges and is very close to the historic gold mining town of Stieglitz. Steiglitz has a number of historic buildings.

Folklore claims that Steiglitz holds the record for having the greatest number of pubs in a Victorian town. Close investigations states that Steiglitz had 4 pubs, 2,500 people, 3 schools and 100 sly grog tents in its heyday. Just as Steiglitz has an interesting history so does CVNC. In this series we will explore aspects CVNC’s history since 1963 when the club was formed. Second thoughts, the thunderbox probably does not meet heritage listing requirements!!

Nestled in the encroaching bush located on the old four-wheel drive track, from the ridge down to the creek. Successful clubs have members who go far beyond what membership requires, they are the foundation and motivation of such clubs. The body of the Ford Prefect is a reminder of what one member donated. Club legend tells that the car engine was donated to the club to run a water pump to service the first of CVNC’s pools. The engine was taken down to the creek boundary, connected to the water pump in a purpose-built shed and water was pumped up to the pool. Legend also claims that it took two people to direct the hose due to the force of the water jet being so strong.

ANOTHER HIDDEN GEM FROM OUR HISTORY

Our stories

THE REMAINS OF THE OLD PUMP HOUSE

The prefect car engine and the pump. Near forty years has had taken its toll on this once important set up. As stated in the above topic, the pump was used to pump water from the creek up to the ridge where the first Club Pool was. The thick bush has largely hidden the setup, however, not enough to stop someone from stealing engine parts. There is discussion as to whether we rebuild the pump house as a static display of club history or move the engine and pump up to near the club house as a static display.
